Erne was a second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning (33rd overall) in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. He spent his first three seasons there as a depth forward, reaching a high of 20 points. From there, he went to the Detroit Red Wings, where he spent four seasons as a bottom-six, physical forward, posting a career-best 11 goals in 2020-21. He was good for about 160 hits per year, using his 6'1", 209-pound frame to hand out some heavy punishment.
At his best, he was a reliable checking-line forward who provided physicality in his dozen or so minutes of ice time per night.
Across 424 NHL games over nine years, Erne had 47 goals and 99 points, while handing out 1,021 hits.
He went to training camps on PTOs the past few years, earning contracts with the Edmonton Oilers in 2023, the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL in 2024, and the Stars this past season.
