Maple Leafs Continue To Discuss Offseason Trades

John Chayka has been a busy man since taking over for Brad Treliving in Toronto, but that doesn't mean the Maple Leafs general manager is anyone close to finished tinkering with his roster.

Chayka continues to discuss multiple trade scenarios with executives around the league, and while the Matthew Knies' trade rumors have slowed down considerably, defenceman Morgan Rielly continues to be a target in trade talks, and is likely getting moved before the start of next season.

Rielly has submitted a list of four teams in the western conference he'd consider a trade too, and word is, Chayka and Rielly have agreed to bring forth other offers if teams do reach out. While the Vancouver Canucks are likely on Rielly's list, there hasn't been a trade offer lined up for Chayka's liking yet. Would Jake DeBrusk be a good swap?

The Anaheim Ducks had interest in Rielly and made calls to Chayka weeks ago, but with Leo Carlsson taking up a massive chunk of their cap space, Rielly's no longer an option on their back end at $7.5 million AAV.

The San Jose Sharks made a trade offer before July 1, but have since turned their attention elsewhere, and brought in Darnell Nurse from the Edmonton Oilers. Rielly has four seasons left on his contract and owns trade protection, so he'll have all the say in the matter, and frankly, he's made it very clear to the Leafs' new management regime, he prefers to play out his contract in Toronto.

However, with his declining defensive metrics, a couple of fresh faces on the back end, and the need to shed some salary, Rielly remains a prime trade candidate for the Maple Leafs. Chayka's made one thing very clear to onlooking GM's, he won't add a trade sweetener to move Rielly, or retain a significant portion of his remaining contract.
