Patrick Kane Finally Makes Free Agent Decision

He's baaack. Unrestricted free agent Patrick Kane is returning to the team with which he won three Stanley Cups. He's signed a two-year, $16 million contract ($8 million AAV) with the Chicago Blackhawks.

The deal comes with a full no-move clause for both years. Per PuckPedia, the first year comes with a $1M salary and an $8M signing bonus, while the second year is also a $1M salary, with a $6M signing bonus.

He decided on a return to Chicago rather than joining his hometown Buffalo Sabres.

Kane spent his first 16 years in the NHL with the Hawks, and last played there in the 2022-23 season, when he was traded at the deadline to the New York Rangers.  He helped lead Chicago to three Cups over a six-year span (2010, 2013, 2015). He won the Conn Smythe as the playoffs' most valuable player in 2013, and led the postseason in scoring with 23 points in 23 games in 2015. 

Now 37, Kane was the Blackhawks' first overall pick in 2007. He won the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year in 2007-08, and the Hart Trophy as league MVP in 2015-16.

He's all over the Hawks' record books, second all-time in points with 1,225, only behind Hall of Famer San Mikita. Kane is third all-time for Chicago in goals with 446 and in games played with 1,161. 

"Day in and day out for 16 seasons, Patrick captivated the city of Chicago with his dazzling skill, creating some of the most memorable moments in Blackhawks history as he helped bring our storied franchise back to the pinnacle of our sport," Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson said in a statement. "He's shown on countless occasions that he knows what it takes to win at the highest levels, and we couldn't be prouder for Patrick to once again call the United Center home and continue to shine in Chicago's brightest lights." 

Now, he's ready to join a new era of Blackhawks hockey, joining a crew of young guns like Connor Bedard, Frank Nazar and Anton Frondell.

Last year, in 67 games with the Detroit Red Wings, he posted 16 goals, 41 assists, and 57 points.
