As a result of the offer sheet match, Hayton cannot be traded for 365 days, but he will be eligible for an extension with Utah as of January 1.
If no new contract agreement is made before July 1, 2027, Hayton will become an unrestricted free agent.
There were reports that Utah had a chance to acquire something at the 2026 Draft for Hayton in a proposed deal with New Jersey, but they bailed on it at the last minute. The Devils would have had to send a second-round pick as compensation if the Mammoth had decided to let Hayton go.
Hayton has been with the Mammoth franchise since Arizona drafted him with the 5th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. He has never quite lived up to that billing. His best year was the 2024-25 season when he scored 20 goals and added 26 assists for 46 points. This past year, he slid back down to 10 goals and 25 points. He remains a solid two-way player and is strong in the faceoff dot.
As for the Devils, they could potentially pivot to a proposed Plan B option to find a new middle-six center.
