The Detroit Red Wings have ramped up their search for a new hockey boss to replace Steve Yzerman. There have been plenty of recognizable names listed as candidates thus far, but insider Elliotte Friedman has an intriguing new name with an interesting background to tell us about as the Wings continue their search for a general manager:
It might not necessarily be a traditional 'hockey person' as we've come to define them. It might be different...
There's one name I want to mention because I don't think it's been out there a lot. It's a person with a bit of a different background. His name is Jeff Greenberg. He's the general manager of the Detroit Tigers. (He) worked for the Chicago Blackhawks a few years ago.

I think it's wrong to say anybody is a lead contender, or anybody's got the inside track, but I do think that he's somebody who's already in the organization who they have some interest in, and I think if he's interested in the job, it will be a factor, although I want to make it very clear, I'm not saying he's not the favorite or anything like that. But he's a name I haven't heard a lot about who will be part of this search if he's interested in the job.

Greenberg currently works under Tigers President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris, under the Ilitch umbrella.

Who is Jeff Greenberg & why is he a candidate for Red Wings GM?

The 40-year-old's first foray into a sports front office came in major league baseball. He spent 11 seasons as a Chicago Cubs executive, helping them win the World Series in 2016. He was named Assistant GM in 2020.

He then served as Associate General Manager for the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks, overseeing strategic systems for 16 months before joining the Tigers and being named GM in September of 2023 at the age of 37.

Still a lot of work to be done by the Red Wings and the search firm they hired, but Greenberg is certainly an intriguing candidate, and one who would be considered an outside-the-box hire.
