Bruins Coach Reveals How Long They Wanted Their Big Offseason Addition
Per Jim McBride of the Boston Globe, Sturm confirmed the Bruins had been eyeing Peterka for a long time before finally landing him this summer. "I think the biggest reason for that trade was us, as an organization, they've been having an eye on him for a long, long time, even before he got drafted," Sturm said. "So even last year, every year it seems like he was in a conversation."
Connection That Predates Either Man's NHL Career
Sturm and Peterka had never actually worked together, despite both being prominent hockey figures from Germany, until Boston made its move at the 2026 draft.
The Bruins sent their 2026 first-round pick and a conditional 2028 first-rounder, originally acquired from Florida in the Brad Marchand trade, to the Utah Mammoth to land the 24-year-old winger.

Peterka was ready for the move too.
His role in Utah had diminished significantly, with his ice time dropping from 18:11 to 15:59 in his lone season with the Mammoth, and he'd hoped his eventual trade would land him in Boston partly because of his connection to Sturm.
Boston Finally Made The Bet
Peterka is signed for four more seasons at a $7.7 million cap hit, a number that fits neatly into Boston's competitive window.
He's posted three straight 25-goal seasons, though his point totals dipped to 47 last year in Utah, down from a 68-point campaign in Buffalo the year before.

The plan is for Peterka to slot in as David Pastrnak's left wing, taking over a spot that's gone through Brad Marchand, Pavel Zacha, and Morgan Geekie in recent years.
Peterka has already expressed excitement about the pairing. "If you have that caliber of a player, I think everyone wants to play with him," Peterka said. "From the past, playing against him, even watching him, was always super special."
Over his five-year NHL career, the 24-year-old has recorded 92 goals and 197 total points over 320 games played.
