Insider Names ‘Pressure Point’ When Real Concern Sets In on Quinn Hughes in Minnesota

The word has been going around the NHL of late, that the so-called sure-fire re-signing of Quinn Hughes with the Minnesota Wild has gone from "when", to "if." But has panic set in yet in Minny? Maybe in some quarters, though insider Elliotte Friedman said on NHL Network that there's a specific 'pressure point' when the real concern will start to take hold. 

People are starting to wonder, 'What's going on here?' I don't have any panic about it yet, but... I'll say this... I will worry about this if it's not done by the start of the season...

I really think in a lot of cases, these things get done when there's a sense of urgency, right? So what are your pressure points?

I just think that if we go into the season and it's not done, that's when I'm really going to start to say, 'Okay, like, what's happening here?'

In the meantime, The Friedge is standing by his original prediction made at the start of the summer that Hughes will sign in Minnesota on a three-year deal with an $18 million AAV. 

What the $18 million offer sheet and subsequent matching by Anaheim on Leo Carlsson does for those numbers remains to be seen.

The Wild pulled off a blockbuster to obtain Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks midway through last season. He went on to have an excellent year there, finishing with 53 points in 48 games for Minny, with a +6 rating, and another 15 points in 11 playoff games with a +10 rating.

But now he's about to head into the final year of his contract at a $7.85 million cap hit and has been eligible for an extension for well over a month. Whenever and wherever he signs his next deal, he will be more than doubling that number, by a wide margin.
