Veteran Goalie Still Unsigned As Market Dries Up
Talbot is probably the best free agent goalie still available heading into August.
Why He's Still Available
The 39-year-old is coming off a rough final season in Detroit, posting an .883 save percentage and a 3.19 goals-against average across 34 games as he lost the starting job to John Gibson.
That drop-off is real, but it followed five of his previous six seasons at a .900 save percentage or better, including two All-Star selections. Talbot has posted a save percentage below .900 only three times in his 13-year NHL career.
His path back to Detroit has closed. The Red Wings have Gibson, Daniil Tarasov, and then Trey Augustine as their goalie of the future, and Talbot's tenure there is considered finished.
Why The Market Has Dried Up
Most teams settled their goaltending questions weeks ago.
Edmonton signed Frederik Andersen away from Carolina. The Hurricanes, in turn, plugged their depth by signing journeyman Zachary Sawchenko rather than pursuing a bigger name. Boston traded away its own backup, Joonas Korpisalo, specifically to open a roster spot for AHL standout Michael DiPietro, with GM Don Sweeney saying he's comfortable with the club's current depth.
And the Islanders, who looked like a plausible fit given Semyon Varlamov's long injury history, closed that door too, signing Vitek Vanecek to a one-year, $1 million deal on July 1 as insurance behind Varlamov and Ilya Sorokin.
That's the pattern across the league. The bulk of goalie movement happens in the first week of July, and by August, most rosters are effectively set.
What's Left
With the obvious depth jobs already filled, Talbot's most realistic path to a roster spot is the one that plays out every summer: a training-camp goaltending injury somewhere in the league that forces a team to make a call.
Daily Faceoff's Carter Hutton compared Talbot's situation to James Reimer's a year ago, predicting he "fully gets a job at some point as the dust settles," even if it takes until the preseason for the right opportunity to appear.
