What Happens Next With Red Wings RFA Simon Edvinsson After 'Alarming' Comments

The continued holdup on getting crucial restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson signed is starting to weigh on some around the Detroit Red Wings. After hearing his agent's comments last week of not knowing "who he's supposed to even be talking to to negotiate a contract," Bob Duff of Detroit Hockey Now called the whole situation "fairly alarming."

But we're getting a bit more of a calming reaction for Red Wings fans from Ansar Khan, speaking on Oilers Now this past week.  

He doesn't want to miss the start of training camp. I would expect that deal to get done fairly soon after a new GM is hired. It's apparent now that nobody's going to make him an offer sheet. It wouldn't happened by now. And even if that happened, from what I've been told, the Wings would match it.

Earlier in the summer, we heard that the threat of an offer sheet for Edvinsson from a rival team was "very real." Khan's reporting suggests that's off the table for now. 

Edvinsson, 23, had another excellent year in his second full-time season, and is a legit top-pairing defenseman for the Red Wings alongside Moritz Seider. The towering, 6'6", two-way d-man posted 25 points and a plus-minus rating of +12 last season, along with 148 blocked shots, while logging over 22 minutes of ice time per night. 

The Wings are going to get him signed, one way or another, despite the delay.
