Blues Lose Key Defenseman Logan Mailloux For Significant Period

This is not the way the St. Louis Blues wanted to enter the 2026-27 season. GM Alex Steen announced on Monday that one of their top defensemen, Logan Mailloux, will be lost for at least eight weeks after hand surgery.

The injury occured this weekend during a fight, in which Mailloux took exception to an incident involving his top-pairing D-man Philip Broberg, who was upended by the Chicago Blackhawks' Cole Smith, in what could have been a dangerous knee-on-knee play.

"He's had a great camp. That's the game. These things pop up when things are going good and it's not the right timing, but this is part of the game. Logan is in a good headspace, like I said, everything went well (with the surgery)," said Steen.

"Now his main goal is to rehab and to get himself as prepared as he was for camp for when he's able to return and at that time grab an oar and start rowing with the boys again."

After averaging 16:46 of ice time in his first full season with the Blues, Mailloux had a strong finish to the season last year, and had himself ready to start the campaign as Broberg's partner on the Blues' top pairing.

It's a tough break for him, and for St. Louis.

He'll be re-evaluated after the eight-week recovery period.
