Brock Faber Suffers Fractured Skull, Out For Significant Period

A frightening update from the Minnesota Wild on star defenseman Brock Faber. He has undergone surgery after suffering a fractured skull in the Wild's final preseason game on Friday against the Dallas Stars. 
Faber was struck in the head by a shot from Dallas forward Sam Steele and was in significant pain on the ice. The puck hit him in the ear area where there is no protection from the helmet. 

Faber did eventually leave the ice under his own steam, and he even returned for his next shift and played the rest of the second period. He did not, however, return for the third.

“If it was a quarter-of-an-inch higher, it just hits his helmet,” Wild coach John Hynes said.   

GM Bill Guerin made the somber announcement to the media Tuesday morning:
There is currently no timeline for his return to play.

"We'll follow the doctor's leads... Brock's at home. He's doing well. He's just resting," said Guerin. 

"Sometimes you just have to put the hockey aside and worry about the human being. That's what we're doing here now."

Faber had successful surgery on Sunday.

“It’s disappointing for the team but more a little bit scary for him, obviously,” top-pairing defense partner Quinn Hughes said. “Obviously, a massive part of our team, so we’ll have to have other guys step up.”

Faber is going into his fourth season in Minnesota, and posted career highs of 15 goals and 51 points last year, while averaging 24:41 of ice time per night.

Overall, he has 127 points in 242 NHL regular-season games.

The Wild begin their 2026-27 season on Thursday in Nashville against the Predators.
