Bruins Will Name A Captain Before Season Opener

The Boston Bruins haven't officially named a captain of the team for the upcoming season yet, but their tune has changed.

It was confirmed today by Ty Anderson of 98.5 Sports Hub that the Bruins will have a leader to bring the team into the 2026-27 season.

Fans have been echoing names such as Charlie McAvoy or David Pastrnak as the next legitimate successor to Brad Marchand, who was the last Bruins captain (2023-25) prior to being traded to the Florida Panthers during the 2024-25 season, which led to him winning his second Stanley Cup.

So what happened? It appeared nearly a month ago that the Bruins weren't going to rush to name a new leader.

Cam Neely on August 17th, per WEEI:

“I don’t know if you necessarily need to have a guy unless there is that one guy that really stands out,” Neely said. “We’ve been blessed to have great captains here. From [Ray] Bourque, [Zdeno] Chara, [Patrice] Bergeron. We like leaders, not followers. So you can hopefully have 20 leaders. That’s the one thing that we look at: who is going to help lead the team? Maybe it’s more of a tradition in hockey where you have a letter on your sweater. Don [Sweeney], Marco [Sturm], and I are going to sit down shortly to talk about that.”

Whoever steps up to accept the honors of wearing the "C" this season will have big shoes to fill, with Patrice Bergeron (2021-23) and Zdeno Chara (2006-20) wearing the patch recently.

Will David Pastrnak or Charlie McAvoy be the next logical successor for the Bruins organization?
