Connor Hellebuyck Suspended By Winnipeg Jets

The Connor Hellebuyck drama in Winnipeg has reached a new level, as the Jets have suspended their All-Star goalie for not reporting to training camp.

The Jets followed by saying that GM Kevin Cheveldayoff will address the media Thursday morning.

For context, Hellebuyck had informed the team that he would not be in attendance at camp, but he had until Wednesday afternoon to report. That failed to happen.

The three-time Vezina Trophy winner had informed the Jets at the end of last season that he wanted a trade out of Winnipeg. There was traction around trade offers back at the NHL Draft at the end of June (particularly with the Buffalo Sabres), but there has been nothing substantial that the Jets have seriously considered in recent weeks.

To be clear, players don't start getting paychecks until the opening of the regular season, but Hellebuyck will go unpaid as long as he holds out/is under suspension. He has an $8.5 million AAV, with five years to run. But a former NHL goalie-turned-analyst said recently that he wouldn't be surprised if Hellebuyck sits out the whole season.

The Jets brought in free agent goalie Stuart Skinner during the summer; he will now be regarded as the No. 1 netminder in town.
