We're now one week away from training camp starting in the NHL, and numerous free agents remain without a contract

One of those is former Winnipeg Jets forward Gustav Nyquist. Nyquist is a Swedish-born forward who was traded to the Minnesota Wild by the Columbus Blue Jackets in 202-23. From there, the former 50-point player would experience what it was like to be a journeyman in the NHL.

He'd sign a two-year deal with the Nashville Predators, where he'd suit up for 138 games, scoring 96 points (32 goals, 64 assists). The Predators would trade Nyquist after his value had peaked, during the 2023-24 season.

Nyquist would suit up for 22 games during the end of the 2024-25 season, scoring 9 goals and 21 points as a secondary-scoring option.

After reaching free agency without a contract from the Wild, he signed to a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the Winnipeg Jets, where his production continued to wane.

Scoring 12 points (1 goal, 11 assists) in 51 games, the Jets wouldn't tender the veteran a new deal, resulting in him remaining a free agent in the first week of September 2026.

There's speculation surrounding his future in the NHL, and Nyquist, who lives in Columbus, OH, had been skating with the Blue Jackets during informal skates.

Nyquist's last contract paid him $3.25 million AAV, and with him being out of work for this long, could GM Don Waddell include him in his future plans if forward Kirill Marchenko ends up being traded out of Columbus?

He's played 914 games in the NHL and scored 543 points (210 goals, 333 assists) as a San Jose Sharks, Detroit Red Wings, Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, Minnesota Wild, and Winnipeg Jets forward.
