Rangers Young Star Prepared To Enter Season Without Extension
"I'm not focused on that at all," Perreault said when asked whether he's thinking about a future extension. "I'll kind of let my agent handle that, and we're just going to focus on day-by-day and having a big year. It'll take care of itself."
Rangers GM Chris Drury declined to share any details when asked about the state of negotiations between the team and Perreault's camp.
A Deadline That Already Passed Him By
September 15 marked the last day teams could sign restricted free agents-to-be to eight-year extensions before the new CBA drops the maximum term to seven, and it triggered a wave of young players locking in massive paydays right before the cutoff.
Perreault's own former USNTDP and Boston College linemate, Ryan Leonard, signed an eight-year, $84 million deal with Washington on that exact deadline day.
Perreault, taken one spot after Leonard in the 2023 draft at 23rd overall, watched that moment pass without a call from his own team.

Per The Athletic's Peter Baugh, there had been no extension talks between Perreault and the Rangers as of that deadline, a detail Baugh reported alongside similar updates on fellow pending RFAs Noah Laba and Will Cuylle.
New York, historically, hasn't been an organization that rushes to hand out long-term deals immediately after a player's entry-level contract expires.
The franchise hasn't given a non-bridge deal to a player coming off his ELC since Adam Fox back in 2022-23.
Why This Season Carries Extra Weight For Him
Perreault isn't eligible for arbitration or an offer sheet next summer, which means his leverage in any future negotiation will come almost entirely from how he performs this season.
He broke into the league in December after starting last year with AHL Hartford, finishing with 12 goals, 15 assists, and 27 points in 49 games while averaging just under 16 minutes a night.

For now, both sides appear content to let the season play out before addressing what comes next, even as the rest of the league's young stars keep cashing in around them.
