Huberdeau Injury Timeline Bad News For Flames

As training camp approaches, the news is good, but not great, for Calgary Flames forward Jonathan Huberdeau. As he continues his recovery from major hip resurfacing surgery in March, general manager Craig Conroy says he's doing well, but likely won't be ready to start the season. 
 “This is a major surgery, so he had a little bit of a setback maybe two weeks ago with his skating. With that, we just want to make sure we do the right thing for him, and if it is to take a little bit more time and have him 100% feeling good about the hip, that’s what we’re going to do," Conroy said on QR770. 

“In the gym, everything else is real positive. We just want to make sure that when he’s on the ice and taking that physical contact, that he’s ready. But it’s coming, and it’s still on his schedule. We’re not going to rush him into something. We feel that at the beginning of the [season], he’s going to be pretty close. It’s just when — we’re not 100% sure yet.”

The Flames open their season at home against the Seattle Kraken on Oct. 1.

Huberdeau has setback, faces tough road back from a difficult surgery

Huberdeau's season was cut short because of chronic hip issues. He finished the campaign with 25 points in 50 games. Hip resurfacing surgery is an extremely difficult procedure to make it all the way back from. He's still in for a tough battle. 

Overall, it's been an extremely disappointing four-year run in Calgary for the former 3rd overall pick (2011 NHL Draft). Coming off his 115-point season with the Florida Panthers, the Flames' main return in the Matthew Tkachuk trade only averaged 56 points a year in his first three campaigns in Calgary, leading up to the shortened year last season. 

He's going into Year 4 of an eight-year, $84 million contract ($10.5 million AAV).

In his 14-year career covering 962 games, the 33-year-old winger has 263 goals and 807 points.
