Report: Carolina Hurricanes Have Made Multiple Trade Offers for Connor Hellebuyck

The Connor Hellebuyck sweepstakes are not going to plan for everyone involved, as trade talks have continued all summer long, and with the new season up us, Hellebuyck has now been suspended for not showing up to training camp. Jets' GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is taking his time with this trade, and admitted he must get this right to ensure the franchise isn't set back by the disgruntled goaltender.

Trade interest has been extremely low around the league, which is shocking to some considering Hellebuyck's resume, but one team that's making consistent trade offers, the Carolina Hurricanes. According to The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, the Hurricanes have a keen interest in Hellebuyck, and frankly, have the trade assets, and cap space to make it work. 

One of the things holding up the trade could be the fact the Jets prefer to land a top-six forward in return, as they need all the help they can get up front, and meanwhile, the Hurricanes trade package is built around defenceman Alexander Nikishin, goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov and likely at least one first-round pick. Don't expect to see any of the Hurricanes best young forwards in the deal, as the organization values them way too much to send to Winnipeg for a 33-year-old goaltender.

Hellebuyck is signed for five more seasons at a very reasonable $8.5 million AAV, and for this season, owns a full no-movement clause. It's been well documented that the Olympic gold medalist prefers to play and live in the United States.

For now, Hellebuyck remains a Jet, and a suspended one. Meanwhile, Cheveldayoff is working the phones trying to land the perfect deal, and has even opened up the door for Hellebuyck to return to the team. From the sounds of it, the former Vezina trophy winner has already turned his back on the franchise and wants to move on.
