Report: Carolina Hurricanes shopping Jesperi Kotkaniemi on trade market

The Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly involved in several trade discussions heading into training camps next week, and one player they've been trying to move all summer long - Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

Hurricanes GM Eric Tulsky is rumored to be involved with the Winnipeg Jets at the moment, working on a deal to land goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, and Tulsky would love to include Kotkaniemi in the deal. No word yet on where the Jets stand, however, if there's a deal that transpires, expect to see some salary retention.

Kotkaniemi, 26, is signed for four more years at $4.8 million AAV, and holds a 10-team no-trade list, and there's serious potential Winnipeg may be on his no-fly list. Kotkaniemi has been trying to live up to the hype for years, and hasn't been able to produce, and last season, only managed two goals and nine points, in 42 games. He averaged just 11:21 of ice-time per game.

The Hurricanes have $9 million in cap space and are set up nicely, so they don't necessarily need to move Kotkaniemi, they just would like to move on.

If the deal for Hellebuyck falls through, look for the Hurricanes to likely stand pat for now, however, if Kotkaniemi ends up dealt, expect to see the Dallas Stars hovering in, along with the Vancouver Canucks.
