Report: John Chayka & Maple Leafs 'Not Done Yet' Wheeling & Dealing
The blockbuster Kirill Marchenko/Matthew Knies deal on the night before the season opener certainly has the hockey world buzzing. But according to Darren Dreger on TSN Overdrive, "They may not be done yet." GM John Chayka and the Toronto Maple Leafs are still out there trying to make a significant deal.
As was evident in Game 1 of the regular season, the Toronto blueline could still use another notable piece, and Chris Johnston of TSN's Insider Trading says that's next on Chayka's shopping list.
Yeah, that’s definitely a fair description of what the Leafs’ approach is, even in these early days of the season. They’re calling it patiently aggressive, but anyone who’s watched the last three months would not call anything patient that’s happened from Chayka thus far.The Leafs feel even after giving up Matthew Knies, who they viewed as their best young trade chip, that they still have other futures that they can move for ‘help now’ solutions. That includes the first-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche and some young prospects. I think they’ll be looking to upgrade even in these early days of the season. One area to keep an eye on is their defence.
A big swing on the blueline? There just happen to be two notable names out there, restricted free agents, who are without a contract and are sitting at home. Could Simon Edvinsson or Alexander Nikishin somehow be on Toronto's radar? It's hard to imagine that the trade pieces they have remaining would be enough to get a deal like that done.
But if there's one thing we've learned about John Chayka (and his cohort in the front office, Mats Sundin), it's that nothing is off the table.
