Simon Edvinsson Contract Talks On Hold; Training Camp Decision Revealed

The Detroit Red Wings have not one, not two, but three huge pieces of business to take care of as training camp fast approaches next week. Restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson is still unsigned; Captain Dylan Larkin still wants a trade; and the team has yet to name a new head of hockey operations/general manager.

And until the latter order of business is addressed (a new GM), the former (Edvinsson) will have to wait. Contract talks are not ongoing at the moment. But according to insider Pierre LeBrun, the young, top-line defender won't let that stop him from attending Red Wings' training camp.

LeBrun says that the young d-man is "Patiently waiting for the Red Wings GM situation to iron itself out before resuming negotiations."

The 23-year-old is in line for a huge deal after establishing himself as the second-most important blueliner on the team, behind Moritz Seider. The latter's $8.55M AAV is tops among defenseman on the team, but given the way salaries have skyrocketed this summer, especially for young players going into their first regular contract following their ELC, it'll be interesting to see if the Wings try to keep Edvinsson below Seider's number. 

Edvinsson, in his second full NHL season, recorded nine goals, 25 points, 148 blocked shots and 94 hits, along with another impressive plus/minus rating of +12 in 72 games. He also logged a personal-best 22:21 average ice time per night. That, too, was second on the team behind Seider. 

The 6'6", 222-pound Swedish behemoth was the sixth overall pick by the Red Wings back in 2021, and has had no trouble living up to that pedigree.
