Toronto Maple Leafs Place 8 Players On Waivers

The Toronto Maple Leafs are gearing up for the 2026-27 season, which means some tough roster decisions are being made. Thursday was no different, as the team announced they've waived eight players.
Most notably, forward Steven Lorentz and defenceman Philippe Myers were placed on waivers, two depth pieces who played most of the season with the Leafs last year. Along with Lorentz and Myers, the Leafs also waived Brendan Brisson, Henrik Rybinski, Marshall Rifai, Michael Pezzetta, Ryan Tverberg, and Vinni Lettieri. If all eight players clear, they'll then be assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League.

Lorentz is certainly the most notable name of the group, as he hasn't showcased enough to the new coaching staff that he can keep up to the speed of the 'new' NHL. Lorentz is signed at $1.35 million AAV through next season, a contract that was questioned by many when former GM Brad Treliving handed it out. It seemed like a gamble at the time, considering the team, and turns out John Chayka now has to clean up Treliving's mess. 

Lorentz went from a PTO to a three-year contract extension, all within months. “The best advice I got in Carolina from Rob Brind’Amour was never come into a camp just expecting to be on the team,” Lorentz told Daily Faceoff Toronto. “No matter what your contract looks like, you always have to come in and fight for a job. So I think if you keep that mentality, it doesn’t matter if you’re in Year 1 or 2 or Year 6 or 7, you have to go in and earn your job in the lineup every single night. So that’s just what I’ve done. And it’s just one day at a time. And training camp’s a process. So I’m just going out playing my game.”

Look for Zack MacEwen and Nick Blankenburg make the opening night roster in the place of Lorentz and Myers.
