The New York Rangers have made their first step towards shoring up the crease, signing 16-year veteran netminder James Reimer to a PTO with their AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack.

It's the second straight year that Reimer has signed a PTO after the season was underway.

Rangers add James Reimer on PTO at AHL after Shesterkin injury

The Rangers lost starting goaltender Igor Shesterkin to a season-ending injury last week in a devastating blow to the franchise.

For now, Reimer will try to get up to speed in the American Hockey League, and the Rangers can assess if they're interested in signing him to an NHL contract.

Rookie Dylan Garand has been a revelation so far for New York, posting a 3-0-1 mark with a .951 save percentage and a 1.15 goals-against average. That improves to 3-0-0 with a .957 Sv% and 1.00 goals-against average in his three starts.

But with only six NHL starts in his career, the 24-year-old will need a notable backup, at the very least. Joonas Korpisalo, the Rangers' backup to enter the season, went down with an undisclosed injury (at an undisclosed time) after sitting on the bench for the first two games of the season. He is out for at least another four weeks.

As for Reimer, the 38-year-old goalie has a career .909 Sv% with a 2.87 GAA. But he hasn't had numbers like that in five years, and last season, played only 14 games with the Ottawa Senators. He was brought in on a PTO mid-season, after going unsigned until then.
