Brutal news for Seamus Casey and the New Jersey Devils. The team has announced that the budding young defenseman has undergone knee surgery and will be out well into December. He'll miss eight to 10 weeks.

It's another tough blow for the 22-year-old, who, for the second year in a row, suffered an injury during training camp that will keep him out of action for a significant period.

Last week, Casey was injured in a preseason game against the NY Rangers.

The Devils' 4th-rated prospect only played two games with the team last season, and only 29 in the AHL, after surgery cut his year short. Now 2026-27 is starting the same way with his second knee surgery of the calendar year.

The organization and fans were buzzing about Casey's future after a dominant performance in a prospects game earlier in September. He was a second-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, and could have found his way up to the big club at some point this season, depending on injuries or other eventualities.

But now, that possibility will have to wait a while. A long while.

“Difficult for him. Of course, he’s fought some injuries and tough start to the season,” head coach Sheldon Keefe said. “In terms of how everything went, he’s doing well. He’ll start his rehab and we’ll get him back on the ice as soon as we can.”
