Flyers Could Act As 3rd Team Connector In Dylan Larkin Trade

Dylan Larkin... Remember him? He was once again THE name on the trade front earlier last week after Connor Hellebuyck finally got moved. Larkin has taken a back seat the past couple of days, though after the bombshell drop of Nikita Kucherov asking for a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning. But make no mistake, the Larkin sweepstakes are still ongoing.

With the Minnesota Wild seemingly being the team that has been the most aggressive on Larkin, but not really having the return package that the Red Wings are looking for, it feels like a third team will be needed to shake this stalemate loose. Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff writes that the Philadelphia Flyers could be the ones to step in and make that happen.
Speaking with team sources, DFO was told that the Flyers would be willing to act as a third-party broker to help facilitate a trade between the Wild and Red Wings...

Salary will be an issue for the Wild if they were to acquire Larkin, and winger Yakov Trenin’s name has been out there since last spring as a potential cap dump. Trenin, 29, has this year and next remaining on his contract, which carries a $3.5-million AAV.

According to Flyers sources, they would be willing to absorb Trenin’s contract for the right price. (Top Minnesota prospect Charlie) Stramel is a player that the Flyers have a level of interest in and would potentially be the cost of doing business for them to take on the remaining term on Trenin’s contract. The Red Wings have the cap space to eat Trenin’s salary if they wanted to, as a Central Division executive pointed out to DFO, but the Flyers are willing to play a part in a deal if there’s a necessity for it.

The Flyers have almost $14M in cap space at the moment, though the Red Wings have almost $29 million. Sure, they're still hoping to sign RFA Simon Edvinsson, but even if they finally manage to pull that off, they'd still have about $18-$19M in space.

The Wild do have a reported potential trade package in the offing for Detroit, that includes Danila Yurov and Stramel, so could they get this done themselves? One assistant GM told Di Marco that those two names won't get a Larkin deal done for Minnesota.

And so the Larkin holdout continues, and his losses while on suspension continue to mount, now at well over $100,000 as of Saturday afternoon, and counting...
