Flyers Rejecting Plenty Of Trade Offers
They've had a lot of people basically in contact with Danny Briere of late trying to offer anchors that are disguised as liferafts. So the Flyers have swatted away a bunch of incoming overtures.
Pierre LeBrun added on TSN's Insider Trading, "My understanding is his phone is getting all kinds of love from other GMs around the league, but not the kind of attention you wanna get."
No easy fix for the Flyers on trade market
"There is no easy fix here. There is no blockbuster trade that the Flyers are gonna pull off to get themselves out of this brutal start."
Kick a man while he's down, is what opposing GMs are attempting to do, from the sounds of it. Some might call it payback for Briere after he upended the entire salary structure of the NHL with his bold, completely outside-the-box $18 million AAV offer sheet to Leo Carlsson this summer. The Anaheim Ducks matched, but contracts around the league have exploded, and there's no putting the toothpaste back in the tube.
However, at this point, it's pretty clear why Briere made that offer. He was desperate for both a No. 1 center and a star player—of which the Flyers have neither at this point.
They need help on offense, but they need it on defense, too. And most of all, said LeBrun, they need the players on hand to figure it out themselves.
"There’s a belief inside that management group that this is a group of young players who, after getting a taste of success last year, maybe took a lot for granted here entering this year. It’s a wake-up call. They gotta fix it themselves."
Their next crack at it comes Thursday night when they take on another team with problems of its own, the Detroit Red Wings.
One thing we do know, at this point, is that head coach Rick Tocchet is not going anywhere.
