Maple Leafs Not Looking For 'Band-Aid Solution' To Defensive Woes

The somewhat promising start to the season for the Toronto Maple Leafs has been handed a big blow over the last week. Three straight losses and they once again find themselves in last place in the cut-throat Atlantic Division.

The trade rumors are flying once again, as the team has made it clear, from all accounts, that they are looking to bolster the blueline. But the latest report from Elliotte Friedman is that we should not expect a "band-aid solution", or the trade of a top asset without getting a real needle-mover back.
They’ve made it very clear they are not interested in a Band-Aid solution. They have said that they will pay a premium asset if they believe they are getting a difference maker on the blue line. Also, they have told people they’re not moving what they consider 'A' assets for a 'B-level' replacement.
What Leafs Nation is most afraid of, after hearing that, is that Easton Cowan is the most likely premium asset that GM John Chayka will be dangling. The Leafs' prospect cupboard is not stocked with 'A-listers', but Cowan has emerged this season as a truly important player on the team. With seven points in nine games, he has asserted himself as a key member of the forward corps. And at just 21, he's got plenty of years ahead of him to be a full-blown top-six member of the group.

But if Toronto is really looking for a "difference maker on the blueline", a deal would ultimately have to start with Cowan, it would seem. And that hurts for Leaf fans to admit.

But what if you could get an equally dynamic and equally young, proven player for the blueline for the future? Is it worth considering...?

The report from Friedman also added that Chayka is willing to trade an older player for a younger one, in general.

Right now, the defense the Leafs run out there on a nightly basis is old. And often overmatched. It's not much different from last season, even with the addition of Darren Raddysh. And also similar to last year, Chris Tanev is out once again with an injury. Sure, the return of the 36-year-old will help, whenever that is. But that won't make the D any younger. A "difference maker" is needed, and the Leafs are on the hunt for one.
