The Oil have faced a slew of injuries to their forward group this season, and needed some help up front. Hallander could provide that, in a bottom-six role.
The 26-year-old center/forward, who came back to the NHL last year after spending a couple of seasons playing in Sweden, was off to a fine start in Pittsburgh this year in limited ice time, with three points in two games played in a depth role, along with a +4 rating.
He was a second-round pick of the Penguins in the 2018 draft, 58th overall. But he played the next three seasons in the SHL in Sweden, came to North America for a cup of coffee with the Pens over two years, only to head back to Sweden for another two seasons. He's only appeared in 18 NHL games total, including 13 last season (4 points), and the two this year. He has a salary of $850K this season, then will be an unrestricted free agent.
Although he's listed as a centre, Hallander had only taken two faceoffs (and lost both) over those 18 games with Pittsburgh.
The Oilers acquired Stastney from the Nashville Predators last December in exchange for a 2027 third-round draft pick. But after they dealt for Connor Murphy at the trade deadline, Stastney lost his spot in the lineup and was a frequent healthy scratch down the stretch. Overall, he appeared in 66 regular season games last year, split between the Oilers and Nashville Predators, recording 10 points.
He'll help with the left-side depth on the Penguins blueline. He's a pending UFA, on a one-year, $1.525 million deal.
He hasn't played yet this season, and had no role on the Oilers blueline.
