Ominous Aleksander Barkov Injury Timeline For Panthers

This is not the news the Florida Panthers were hoping for. After suffering another serious leg injury this week, Aleksander Barkov has been placed on long-term injured reserve (LTIR).

He'll meet with Panthers doctors for more tests on Monday.

At the moment, there is no timeline for his return. In fact, the team is still not sure of the severity of the injury to his left knee, except that he will miss at least the next 10 games, allowing them to use LTIR.

Head coach Paul Maurice can't even say for sure whether or not Barkov will be back this season. “I’m not the doctor here. So, we’ll see. Whatever they say.”

Reporter Emily Kaplan, however, shares that "there is optimism his injury is not season-ending, per sources."

Barkov missed the entire 2025-26 season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee on the first day of camp.

This time, it's his left leg. The incident occured when his leg collapsed awkwardly while jockeying for the puck along the boards in their 4-3 overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks Thursday night.

With Barkov going on LTIR, the Panthers have recalled bottom-six forward Sam Lafferty and defenseman Alexander Petrovic. Their next game is on Sunday in Anaheim against the Ducks.

Of course, this could spark the Dylan Larkin trade rumors once again, as we know that Florida is one of his preferred destinations. But it doesn't change the fact that the Cats likely don't have the return package that the Detroit Red Wings would be looking for.

Internally, top line center options include moving up Sam Bennett, or perhaps shifting Sam Reinhart back to center.
