Marchand couldn't put any weight on his left leg as he was helped off the ice after crashing into the post on Tuesday and having his leg bend awkwardly underneath him.
He joins captain Sasha Barkov on the six-week timeline brigade. And again, like Barkov, this is considered a best-case scenario.
Marchand gets good news, could be back in six weeks
Maurice did indicate that the feisty forward should be back on the ice after about three weeks, and needs about three more weeks for conditioning before returning to the lineup. On this schedule, he should miss about the next 19 Panthers' games.
“Nobody said 'months' yet,” he added, “so we’re taking 'weeks'.”
The 38-year-old Marchand is in his 18th NHL season and, up until last year, had been remarkably durable throughout his career. He had played at least 70 games in all but one of the 14 full 82-game seasons since he'd become a regular in 2010, and even that one outlier (2017-18) still saw him play 68 games.
But Father Time began to rear its ugly head last season, when Marchand was only able to play 52 games due to a number of lower-body injuries for a large portion of the year. He underwent surgery late in the offseason and had only been back for two games this month before suffering this latest leg injury.
In the meantime, Maurice will now have to jockey his lines yet again, as Marchand had taken Barkov's spot on a line with Brady Tkachuk and Sam Reinhart. Lars Eller filled in there during practice on Friday.
