Report: Rangers Sign James Reimer To NHL Contract

The New York Rangers are in dire straits in net after last night. Upstar goaltender Dylan Garand has given up 10 goals in the last two games and, with Joonas Korpisalo out, has been the only one guarding the crease.

Until now.

It was announced by Vince Mercogliano on "X" today that the New York Rangers have signed veteran goaltender James Reimer to an NHL contract. Originally signed to a PTO on Oct. 15th, 2026, the Rangers have had to shift priorities with Igor Shesterkin out for the season.

They have given Garand a backup in Reimer, who last played in 15 games in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators during the 2025-26 season. His record was 7-4-2, 2.42 GAA, and an .886  SV%.

The signing has been announced, but there is no word on compensation for Reimer, as he assumes a larger role in the Rangers organization in the midst of an injury bug.

Last season with the Senators, he was paid $850K AAV on a contract that expired last season, and hadn't found work until he was signed to a PTO by the Rangers early this season.

According to Puckpedia, the team has $3.565 M in space available.

It's not unrealistic to see him make that or more as a backup in New York this season, with the Rangers pushed up against the cap.

Update: Per Pierre LeBrun of TSN, Reimer will make $850K AAV as a blueshirt in 2026-27.

Reimer has played 539 games in the NHL, with a career record of 232-191-67, 2.87 GAA, and a .909 SV%, originally drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs 99th overall in the 4th round of the 2006 NHL Draft.
