Reports: Dylan Larkin Outcome To Have Massive Impact On Quinn Hughes

With the report that Dylan Larkin has expanded his trade list to 10 teams, we all wait for the hammer to drop, and the Detroit Red Wings to finally pull the trigger.

We've all known for some time now that the Minnesota Wild are on Larkin's preferred list (they were one of the original three teams on it). But now we hear that the New Jersey Devils have been added as an approved destination.

That should directly impact the Quinn Hughes contract hold-up in Minnesota, according to reports. The Wild have been waiting patiently for Hughes to make up his mind about signing an extension there, as he's set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

Michael Russo reported recently that if the Wild can somehow land Larkin, Hughes would sign on the dotted line pronto.

"I really think that if they get Larkin, Quinn [Hughes] signs, like, the next day.

"I think that he's been aware all summer long that Larkin would welcome a trade to Minnesota. Hughes... being astute with everything when it comes to the sport, I think he looks at this (Wild) roster and probably sees them being at least a center away. And Dylan is the type of guy that can get them over the line."

Devils added to Larkin's mix could directly impact Quinn Hughes's future

But now with the Devils in the mix, what if they land Larkin? As hockey analyst Lyle Richardson writes, "If Larkin is traded to the Devils, it could further entice Quinn Hughes to join his brothers in New Jersey as a free agent next summer."

In other words, no extension in Minnesota in that scenario.

Elliotte Friedman, speaking on NHL Morning Skate on NHL Network Radio on SiriusXM, said, "It's pretty fascinating stuff. I don't know if there's anything else that Minnesota can throw into that Larkin trade (offer) that they haven't made already." And if  Hughes doesn't sign sometime during this season, they could be forced to trade him, like the Carolina Hurricanes did with Mikko Rantanen a couple of seasons back. And that worked out pretty well for them.

"I think that has to be a consideration for (the Wild). 100%... (But) to me, it comes down to, does Minnesota think they can win the Stanley Cup (this year)?  And if you think you can win the Stanley Cup, then you bite the bullet and go for it (and not trade Hughes, even if he's still unsigned at the trade deadline)."

Lots of intrigue here, as the Dylan Larkin and Quinn Hughes situations start to coalesce and blend together into one big melting pot of a drama.
