Report: Up To 10 Teams In Talks With Red Wings On Simon Edvinsson

The Detroit Red Wings continue to have trade talks about Simon Edvinsson with up to 10 teams, including the San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, even though interim GM Shawn Horcoff still wants to sign him.

“Horcoff still wants to sign him and is still holding out hope there, but he continues to have trade talks,” LeBrun said on Tuesday’s Insider Trading.

“There are up to 10 teams that continue to be involved in these talks, and I’m told the San Jose Sharks and Boston Bruins are among the teams that are interested.”

Edvinsson’s Camp Sees A Trade As The Logical Step

LeBrun reported that Edvinsson and his agent, J.P. Barry, met face-to-face with Horcoff late last week without a breakthrough, and he said Edvinsson “feels this has dragged out so long that the most logical option for him is probably a trade.”

Edvinsson hasn’t formally requested a trade, LeBrun said, though Elliotte Friedman reported earlier this month that he prefers one.

Horcoff said October 14, “I have zero interest in trading Simon Edvinsson. I want to keep him,” and LeBrun’s update suggests Detroit is keeping its options open while that stance holds.

Edvinsson is 23, was the sixth overall pick in 2021, had 25 points in 72 games last season while averaging a career-high 22:21 a night, and hasn’t played this season as an unsigned restricted free agent.

He has until December 1 to sign, or he’ll be ineligible to play in the NHL for the rest of the season.

The Market And The Price

LeBrun reported October 8 that at least 10 teams had inquired about Edvinsson, including Boston, and the new wrinkle is that those talks are described as ongoing and that San Jose is among the interested clubs.

If Detroit does trade him, LeBrun said teams should look to the Mikhail Sergachev, Noah Dobson, and Bowen Byram trades as the best comparables for what a young defenseman costs.

David Pagnotta reported earlier this month that Edvinsson is seeking a maximum seven-year deal worth between $9 million and $11 million a year, and there has been described a sizeable gap between the sides.

LeBrun has also reported that ownership gave Horcoff full authority to finalize an extension, so a deal remains possible before the December 1 deadline.
