Report: Senators Could Target Two Penguins Forwards

Ottawa Senators GM Steve Staios is searching for a scoring winger, according to Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia, and The Fourth Period suggested Ottawa could potentially circle in on Pittsburgh Penguins forwards Rickard Rakell or Bryan Rust.

Why Ottawa Wants Help

Garrioch reported that Staios started making calls before Warren Foegele left Tuesday’s 4-1 loss to Vegas, and that the Senators need a forward who can fit into their top nine.

Ottawa is 9-5-1 but 18th in the league at 3.13 goals per game, and William Eklund is likely out into the new year after ankle surgery.

Garrioch’s list of possible trade targets was Teuvo Teravainen, Andrew Copp, Michael Rasmussen, and Michael Eyssimont, and he said Staios would prefer to wait until closer to the deadline.

Marek and Pagnotta said on DFO Insider that Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Vancouver, and Calgary are also looking for scoring.

The Senators currently have $1.8M in cap space.

The Penguins Options

Rakell is 33, carrying a $5 million cap hit through 2027-28, and has an eight-team no-trade list.

He scored 35 goals in 2024-25 and had 24 goals and 48 points in 60 games last season, and he has four goals and four assists through 14 games to start the season.

Pittsburgh reportedly tried to move him since the summer without success.

Rust is 34, makes $5.125 million through 2027-28, has no trade protection, and had 29 goals and 65 points last season.

He went on injured reserve October 22 with a lower-body injury and is expected to miss at least six weeks. He had three goals and five points in seven games prior to the injury.

TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Dubas is listening on Rakell, Rust, Erik Karlsson, and Kris Letang while new ownership pushes a youth movement, and the Penguins reportedly want meaningful assets back.
