Sharks Hold Players-Only Meeting; Coach Warsofsky On Hot Seat

They were one of the darling picks by prognosticators coming into the new NHL season. But the San Jose Sharks are drowning right now, losers of five of their last six games. And after a 7-2 drubbing at the hands of the LA Kings Wednesday night, the players shut their head coach out and held a players-only meeting.

Is Ryan Warsofsky's job in jeopardy? Is the Sharks' young head coach on the hot seat already?

The Sharks' exciting young core, led by burgeoning superstar Macklin Celebrini, is being "strangled" by Warsofsky's "rigid defense-first systems," according to Dieter Kurtenbach in the Mercury News.  Celebrini has just three points in the last seven games, and the team has just seven goals total in their last five games. The debate has stepped up even more after Warsofsky openly called out the team for a lack of "buy-in" and effort following that string of low-scoring losses.

Pierre LeBrun spoke about Warsofsky's status on RDS's Aux 4 coins de la LNH, alluding to the fact that the 39-year-old coach just signed an extension in September, which might be the one thing that's saving his job at this point.

"One of the things that has started in the last few days is speculation regarding head coach Ryan Warsofsky. Are the Sharks perhaps thinking of changing coaches?... (Don't forget) he just signed a new contract in September. I'm not saying they can't change coaches if this continues, but I'm just saying it's less straightforward with a coach who just signed a new contract."

On The Fin Factor podcast, a couple of days ago, the future of Warsofsky was discussed at length.

"Is the team going to be better off firing Ryan Warsofsky? No. No. I don't think so," said Paul Sunseri. But guest Alan Hoshida, while agreeing, did have a caveat: "I think sanity-wise, if they go five more games or lose six games in a row, that can't happen, and they've gotta do something. (Sharks team owner) Hasso Plattner has lots of money, so paying Ryan Warsofsky whatever his extension is... Hasso has that (money)."

Until the Sharks turn this around and start producing offense again, Warsofsky's seat could continue to get hotter.

San Jose is currently 7-9-1, in 6th place in the Pacific Division.
