Report: Wild Still Trying To Trade $7 Million Forward

The Minnesota Wild are still shopping forward Yakov Trenin, according to The Fourth Period, which ranked him No. 14 on its November 1 Trade Watch List and wrote that he “may end up being a casualty of the salary cap” in Minnesota.

The Wild have been shopping Trenin since last season.

Why Minnesota Is Shopping Him

The Athletic’s Michael Russo and Joe Smith reported over the summer that Minnesota was shopping Trenin to create cap flexibility ahead of July 1, which shows the Wild still haven’t found a taker.

The Fourth Period also wrote that Minnesota continues its search for a top-two centre, and it lists forward Danila Yurov at No. 17 as another piece the Wild are dangling.

According to the list, Yurov was offered to Detroit in a deal for Dylan Larkin, and if that fails, the Wild will look elsewhere for help down the middle.

Trenin could be part of that effort because moving his $3.5 million cap hit would free room to add a bigger salary at centre, though nothing has been reported on a package that includes him.

The Contract And The Fit

Trenin is 29 and carries a $3.5 million cap hit through 2027-28 on the four-year, $14 million contract he signed with Minnesota in July 2024, and he reportedly has a 10-team no-trade list.

He is a physical bottom-six forward who can play centre or wing and kills penalties, and he scored 12 goals in each of the two seasons before he signed in Minnesota.

So far this season, the 6-foot-2, 201 lbs forward has no goals, two assists and 75 hits through 17 games, averaging 13:10 ice time per game, which is just seven seconds less than his average last season across 82 games, where he also recorded 413 hits.

That kind of player has value for a contender looking for depth, but the 10-team list and a contract that runs two more seasons including this one could narrow the market for a Wild team trying to move him.

Since joining the Wild, Trenin has 13 goals, 40 total points, and a whopping 729 hits over 175 games played.
