US defeats Canada 4-1 in bronze medal game

The United States defeated Canada 4-1 to claim the bronze medal at the World Hockey Championship on Sunday. Nick Bonino scored the winner on a rebound during a power play in the third period. Chris Kreider scored 2 goals for the US, including an empty-netter. Anders Lee scored another empty-netter. Defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic was the only goal scorer for Canada. Sweden plays Switzerland for gold later Sunday.

With the two-time NHL scoring leader, Connor McDavid as captain, Canada was expected to contend for the gold medal. However, Canada lost in the preliminary round to the US and Finland. In the semifinals, Canada lost 3-2 to Switzerland to setup a bronze medal game with the US.

US had a great start to the tournament with six straight wins. In the semifinals, US lost its first and only game 6-0 to Sweden to setup a bronze medal game with Canada.
