NHL Trade Rumors: Rick Nash Trade Destinations

The Columbus Blue Jackets have been looking to trade Rick Nash for close to a year and 2012 NHL Free Agency put a damper on the Blue Jackets' plan to move their captain. Why would any team give up assets in the form of prospects or draft picks - when they can sign free agents and give up no assets just as the Minnesota Wild did when they acquired Zach Parise and Ryan Suter.

Since free agency has passed, the attention has once again turned to Nash. The elite forward made public his list of destinations he would approve a trade to: Boston, Detroit, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and San Jose.

Now consider Nash has an annual cap hit of $7.8 million until the year 2018. Another valuable left winger named Bobby Ryan is on the trading block and comes with a more manageable annual cap hit of $5.1 million until 2015.

GM Scott Howson continues to ask a high price in return for Nash, but is he really worth the large investment of both assets and cap hit? Look for Rick Nash to remain a Columbus Blue Jacket for the start of the 2012-2013 NHL season.

UPDATE: GM Howson lowered his asking price significantly and a deal got done with the New York Rangers. Over a decade with a single team, the Columbus Blue Jackets, you can not fault Rick Nash for wanting to move on.
