The LA Kings won the 2012 NHL Stanley Cup because of goalie Jonathan Quick who won the Conn Smythe trophy as the league's MVP of the playoffs. Quick has resigned for the long term until the year 2023.

Bernier who is 23 years old wants to take on the role of starting goaltender and wants to win a Conn Smythe Trophy of his own. Playing just 16 games in the 2011-2012 NHL regular season and zero games in the playoffs, he is no longer content with taking a backseat to Quick and has demanded to be traded from the LA Kings.

The Kings told Bernier that they would look to move him once the contract with Quick was finalized. The New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and Chicago Blackhawks are interested in acquiring Jonathan Bernier of the LA Kings.
