The April 3 NHL trade deadline is fast approaching and the Anaheim Ducks are without contract extensions for stars Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry - both about to be unrestricted free agents. It’s going to be interesting to see how GM Bob Murray plays it.

On the one hand, you may think that the Ducks cannot afford to trade their stars because they are challenging for first overall in the NHL standings. On the other hand, every GM in the NHL noted what happened to Nashville when they kept Ryan Suter past the trade deadline last season, and what happened to New Jersey with Zach Parise. Both players ended up walking out the door in free agency to the Minnesota Wild and their teams got nothing in return.

GM Murray is shopping center Ryan Getzlaf. There is a real good chance the Ducks trade Getzlaf, no matter their position in the standings. The Anaheim Ducks are not going to take any chances, especially when you consider they lost defenseman Justin Schultz to free agency last summer. The Edmonton Oilers are offering a package deal for Ryan Getzlaf with center Sam Gagner as the main piece.
