The New York Islanders have acquired the rights to defenseman Dan Boyle from the San Jose Sharks in return for a conditional 5th round draft pick. The condition is that the pick becomes a 4th rounder if Boyle signs with the Islanders. Boyle's $6.67 million annual cap hit contract is expiring and he will likely test free agency on July 1.

It comes as no surprise that the Sharks traded the 37 year old veteran blueliner because GM Doug Wilson stated publicly that Boyle would not be back next season after the Sharks disappointing first round playoff exit. Boyle is still capable of offensive production but seems to have lost his strong defensive abilities.

The Islanders improved their goaltending when they recently acquired Jaroslav Halak from the Washington Capitals. If GM Garth Snow can also sign Dan Boyle, then the New York Islanders may be capable of pushing for a playoff spot in the 2014-2015 NHL season.
