Rumor: Blockbuster trade rumour between Montreal and Edmonton

Earlier this week, we reported on a rumour that would send Montreal's Andrew Shaw to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Milan Lucic. It seems to be gaining traction, as we have a much larger trade rumour to announce.

Montreal hockey radio host Martin McGuire reported on a possible trade that would send Andrew Shaw, Max Pacioretty and a 2nd round pick in 2018 to Edmonton in exchange for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Milan Lucic.

The Canadiens have 4 2nd round picks this year (Montreal, Chicago, Washington and Toronto). Andrew Shaw's season has been riddled with injuries, keeping him to only 51 games this season. He has collected 10 goals and 20 points this season, his lowest point total in a full season in his career. Similarly, Pacioretty has had a disappointing season as well. He has only collected 17 goals and 37 points in 64 games this season, his lowest goal total since 2012-13.

In contrast, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins has had a very good year with the Oilers. He collected 46 points this season, his highest since 2014-15, but in only 61 games. Lucic did not have a similarly successful season this year, only collecting 10 goals and 34 points. That is is worst point total in almost a decade (2009-10).

Contracts:
Max Pacioretty: 1 year left, 4.5M cap hit
Andrew Shaw: 4 years left, 3.9M cap hit
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins: 3 years left, 6M cap hit
Milan Lucic: 5 years left, 6M cap hit
