Rumor: Something Brewing in Toronto

With the trade deadline looming, there are rumours a plenty in Leaf land. Time for an update.

As is almost always the case, the Leafs end up linked to several trade bait names every year around this time. I don't report everything I hear as most of it makes no sense. This however is different.

Most notably in recent days, top brass of the Maple Leafs organization have been seen scouting games involving Carolina. Everything we read and hear has Brett Pesce as the targeted piece on the Leafs radar.

Young and on a team friendly deal for multiple years to come, he would be the ideal fit on the right side of the blue line. Brett could play 1st or 2nd pair minutes depending on how Babcock chooses to orientate pairs and utilize Jake Muzzin if Jake Gardiner does indeed depart as a UFA this summer.

In October of 2017, I originally broke this rumour to the hockey world and since has been touched on by the likes of Friedman and Dreger. Where there is smoke there is fire and there is obvious smoke in this situation.

Some media outlets also have the Leafs linked to Michael Ferland of the Canes, however the people I talk to say he would be a secondary piece in any deal between the Leafs and Canes, as Dubas is not interested in rentals unless he needs to fill a void left by a player departing in the trade.

Keep your eyes on this one folks. Something is brewing, perhaps a Hurricane or two.
