Report: Evgeni Malkin requested a trade last season

According to The Athletic's Rob Rossi, Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeni Malkin requested a trade last season.

In Rossi's report, Malkin was growing tired of the Kessel-Sullivan rift and told Pittsburgh general manager Jim Rutherford that if Kessel was to return with the team this season, he would not be back with the organization.
It's clear that he grew tired of feeling caught between the ongoing Sullivan-Kessel rift, according to multiple league sources, Rossi stated in his article. Those sources also say Malkin had to come believe Kessel was content with two titles and mostly interested in his statistics. Malkin was worried he'd be seen the same way if Kessel remained his winger.
It took team captain Sidney Crosby to go see Rutherford for a change to happen. According to The Athletic, Crosby told Rutherford; "It's me and Geno, that's it."

Pittsburgh traded Kessel to Arizona along with Dane Birks and a 2021 4th rounder for Alex Galchenyuk, and Pierre-Olivier Joseph. Here's to hoping that things will simmer down in Pittsburgh this coming season.
