Rumor: Auston Matthews to be named Captain of the Maple Leafs

The Maple Leafs have gone several years without a captain, and President, Brendan Shanahan has made it clear, this year the team will have a captain. His name is Auston Matthews.

According to sources close to the Maple Leafs the team has internally decided to name Auston Matthews the captain of the Maple Leafs. The plan is to have a press conference between the end of the preseason and the start of the regular season, to introduce Matthews and his new letter.

There has also been talks about waiting, and introducing him for the first time on opening night, as the last Maple Leaf introduced as the team is scheduled to take on the rival Ottawa Senators on opening night, October 2nd.

Matthews appears ready to break out for a monster season as he's been dominating the preseason for the Buds. While Matthews is expected to don the 'C', the likes of Morgan Rielly, Mitch Marner, John Tavares, and Jason Spezza are expected to round out the leadership core, wearing the Assistant 'A's, two home and two away.

Clark, Gilmour, Sundin, Phaneuf, and now Auston Matthews.
