Done Deal: Marc Staal traded to the Detroit Red Wings

The New York Rangers have announced they have traded defenseman Marc Staal to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for future considerations.

The salary dump deal also includes a 2nd-round pick heading to the Red Wings and frees up roughly $6 million in cap space for the Rangers.

The Rangers plan on using the cap space to shore up a contract extension with Anthony Deangelo.

For the Wings, the trade makes a ton of sense. They have cap space to use, and gain a 2nd-round pick in the deal. They can also turn around and trade Staal at the trade deadline and acquire more assets as they continue to build their new core.

Smart trade for both clubs!
