Rumor: Marc-Andre Fleury Will Be Bought Out This Week

The Vegas Golden Knights are loaded with two great goaltenders, but it's an awfully expensive tandem. Robin Lehner was acquired at the trade deadline and he was given the starting position over Marc-Andre Fleury during the playoffs. Now, Fleury's contract is likely to be bought out in order to combat salary cap issues.

Fleury has two years remaining with an annual cap hit of $7 million. The Golden Knights are interested in signing Lehner, who is a pending UFA, and they would like to acquire a top end blueliner. In order to achieve this, Fleury's $7 million salary must be relieved against the cap.

Fleury has tons of hockey left in him, but his salary is quite commanding. This makes finding a trading partner rather difficult. The Golden Knights would like to prepare for the free agency frenzy and ensure their salary cap encumbrances do not interfere with their plans. Buying out Fleury's contract will result with an annual cap hit of $2.583 million until the end of the 2024 season.
