Ottawa Senators Make Surprising Roster Move

The Ottawa Senators are currently 1-8-1 on the season and it doesn't feel like that's going to be changing anytime soon. The team spent this past offseason bringing in a ton of new players but some have questioned why they brought in so many mid-level veteran players. The team is full of potential with some of their young core, and these veterans have been getting in their way.

Today the changing of the guard has begun as defenseman Braydon Coburn has been put on waivers, and top defensive prospect Erik Brannstrom has been recalled by the team.

The 35-year-old Coburn has appeared in eight games this season and is a minus five rating with one assist. He was brought over in a cap clearing trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning, which at the time didn't make much sense and now still doesn't.

As for Brannstrom, the 21-year-old was the prize jewel in the Mark Stone trade and last season played 31 games and recorded four points. In the AHL where he received more minutes, he put up good numbers with 23 points in 27 games and we'll have to wait and see if he can build some trust with the NHL coaches to get more significant ice-time.
