Washington Capitals: 2 Prospects Who Could Make The Team Next Season

Having a strong prospect pool is such an important thing, as it helps determine the future success of all NHL franchises. Although it is always nice to be competitive now, the league changes rapidly and it truly is a young man's league. Therefore, it feels right to start a 32-team segment covering them. During it, we will be looking at two prospects from every NHL franchise who could become NHL regulars next season.

In this specific piece, we will be reviewing the Washington Capitals. The Capitals finished last season with a 36-15-5 record and showed that they are still quite good. However, after losing round one of the playoffs in five games to the Bruins, it is clear that they should make some changes. They are one of the oldest teams in the league, so they could look to get younger and insert these two players in their lineup next season. Even if it is limited play, it would still be interesting to see them make the jump.

Connor McMichael C: Connor McMichael appeared in one NHL game this past season with the Caps. He also got his first taste of AHL action and performed very well. In 33 games, the 20-year-old scored 14 goals and recorded 27 points. He is certainly an offense-first type of player who could become a mainstay in their top-six later down the road. Also with the trade rumors surrounding center Evgeny Kuznetsov, he could very well be a potential candidate to join the lineup. At a minimum, expect to see him get some action in the league next season.

Martin Fehervary D: With the Washington Capitals losing both Brendan Dillon and Zdeno Chara, there are two spots that prospect Martin Fehervary can fight for on the left side. He played six games with the Capitals back in 2019-20 and recorded an assist. He also is coming off of a fantastic, yet short season with the Hershey Bears, as he had 17 total points in just 24 games. It was a significant increase of production from his 14 points in 56 games with the Bears the season before. Therefore, the 21-year-old should at least be given a chance next season.
