NHL Rumors: Calgary and Seattle Talking Trade

The Calgary Flames and Seattle Kraken have reportedly held some preliminary trade discussions and they are centered around Kraken captain and long-time Flame, Mark Giordano.

Giordano was recently named to the trade bait list of TSN's Chris Johnston and finds himself grinding his way through the inaugural campaign for the Kraken. The team is starting to turn it around of late, regardless, it appears Giordano's preference at this time would be to return to Calgary. We recently reported on the fact he has no interest in retiring any time soon.

So far in 19 games as the captain of the Kraken, the veteran defenseman has recorded seven points in 19 games. It's likely been tough for him to watch his old team this season, as after a few years of struggles the Flames appear to be serious contenders thanks to a newfound emphasis on team defense.

The trade deadline this season is March 21, but you can expect some deals long before then. The Kraken don't appear to be in the mix for a playoff spot in their opening year, so look for them to move on from some assets, including most of their pending free agents like Giordano.

The 38-year-old defenseman is in the final season of his contract, paying him $6.75 million. The Kraken would have to retain some salary in order to make a deal work, it will just likely cost the Flames a better prospect. Calgary has roughly $500,000 in cap space at the moment. Certainly making any deal tough so look for them to try and get another team involved to lower Giordano's cap hit down even more.

Keep an eye on Giordano's name on the trade bait list as it could be coming off of there very soon. He would love to join his old teammates in Calgary and just may get his wish.
