Florida Panthers Top Prospect Traded

Justin Sourdif was a 3rd round pick of the Florida Panthers in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and the promising 19-year-old signed his entry-level contract this past offseason after a strong showing at Panthers Rookie Camp, according to Florida Hockey Now.  The 5'11" right-winger has spent parts of the last 5 seasons with the Vancouver Giants of the WHL, tallying 167 points in 171 games during that stretch, and eventually serving as team captain.

Unfortunately this season, the Giants have fallen out of playoff contention, so Sourdif was available to be had for the right price ahead of Monday's WHL Trade Deadline.  The Edmonton Oil Kings are currently in 2nd place in the Eastern Conference, and they were happy to pay a hefty fee to acquire the services of the Giants' captain.  Two 1st round picks and fellow 19-year-old forward Jacob Boucher was sent to Vancouver in exchange for the future Florida Panther, giving the team some pieces to rebuild with moving forward.

The trade between junior teams will not affect Sourdif's status with the Panthers and he's already settled in nicely with his new team, notching an assist in his first game, a 4-1 victory over the Prince Albert Raiders.
